Cyberpunk 2077 is CD Projekt Red's open-world action-RPG set in Night City, a dystopian California megacity built on the tabletop RPG Cyberpunk 2020 by Mike Pondsmith. Released in December 2020 to enormous anticipation following its predecessor The Witcher 3, the game's launch was notoriously troubled — plagued by bugs, performance problems on last-generation consoles, and a since-resolved controversy over pre-release marketing, to the point that Sony temporarily pulled it from the PlayStation Store. What followed over the next several years was one of the more remarkable redemption arcs in modern gaming: through the massive 2.0 update, the free Phantom Liberty expansion, and continuous patching, CD Projekt Red transformed Cyberpunk 2077 into one of the most acclaimed RPGs of its generation, culminating in a spinoff anime series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, that itself became a critical and commercial hit and drove a huge resurgence of interest back into the game. Mechanically, Cyberpunk 2077 blends first-person shooting, melee combat, hacking, and stealth into a flexible build system built around cybernetic implants — players can replace limbs, eyes, and organs with mechanical augmentations that grant new abilities, from mantis blades that pop out of the forearms to a wire-fu style whip weapon to full cyberware that lets characters "netrun" into enemy systems and hack cameras, turrets, and even enemy combatants' own cyberware remotely. Night City itself is divided into distinct districts each with a wildly different visual identity and social class, from the corporate towers of City Center to the gang-controlled slums of Pacifica, all built with an incredible density of detail, environmental storytelling, and side content, much of which — thanks to the 2.0 overhaul's rebuilt police and NPC AI systems — reacts far more believably to player actions than it did at launch. The Phantom Liberty expansion, released alongside the 2.0 update in 2023, added an entirely new spy-thriller storyline set in the walled-off district of Dogtown, featuring Idris Elba as an FIA agent working alongside V on a mission involving the President of the New United States of America — content widely regarded as some of CD Projekt Red's best writing since The Witcher 3's own expansions, and a major factor in the game's continued sales momentum years after its rocky debut. Cyberpunk 2077 remains one of the most demanding games used to benchmark new graphics hardware, thanks to its extensive ray tracing and path tracing implementations — the latter, marketed as "Overdrive Mode," offers some of the most photorealistic real-time lighting available in any released game, leveraging technologies like NVIDIA DLSS 3 frame generation to make fully path-traced 4K gameplay achievable on high-end RTX hardware. At the same time, its scalable settings and FSR support mean the game runs acceptably on far more modest systems at lower fidelity, making it a title that spans the entire spectrum from budget gaming PCs to flagship graphics card showcases.
