How We Calculate

We explain the logic behind our FPS estimates as clearly as we can — we believe you should know how a number is calculated before you trust it.

1Overview

FPS Driver has a calculation engine that estimates roughly how many FPS you'll get in a given game with the GPU and CPU you select. This is not a measurement — it's an estimate based on a mathematical model.

2Hardware Scoring

Every GPU and CPU in our database is assigned a relative performance score, based on publicly available benchmarks and manufacturer specifications. This score reflects how powerful that hardware is compared to a reference point (an RTX 4070 and a Ryzen 7 7700X).

3The FPS Formula — Bottleneck Model

For every game, we define coefficients describing how dependent that game is on the GPU versus the CPU. The engine calculates two separate scenarios: 'How many FPS can your GPU render at this resolution and these settings?' and 'What's the maximum FPS your CPU can drive this game at?' (a ceiling independent of resolution). The result is whichever of the two is lower — because in real hardware, frame time is also governed by whichever component, GPU or CPU, is slower. This produces a realistic bottleneck behavior: a powerful GPU paired with a mid-tier CPU won't show unlimited FPS gains just from lowering resolution.

4Limitations

This is not a simulation — it's a mathematical estimation model. Your actual FPS is affected by many variables: driver version, background applications, in-game scene density, thermal throttling, RAM speed, and more. Our estimates may deviate from real-world results in some games; we're continuously working to reduce this.
